I moved from a suburban town on the east coast to a semi-urban part of the west coast at the start of the pandemic. The push and the pull were rooted in a single painful thought — that, owing to the lockdown, I would not be able to visit frequently, let alone get to know, my just-born first grandchild who lived on the west coast.
